A seriously fun learning center, L3 Academy fosters a child’s natural curiosity about the world to think critically and solve problems. At L3, our classes and programs are geared to go beyond just being an af
terschool enrichment program. While we believe learning can and should be fun, we also believe that it takes time and that there should be continuity. The majority of our classes and programs are structured to build upon one another (though they can be taken individually). Click below to view schedules.

Robotics / STEM

L3 Robotics Club: Take Your Skills to the Next Level

The L3 Academy Robotics Club is a weekly/bi-weekly program specifically for students who want to explore challenging and fun projects beyond "just the build." The kids will form robotics teams and work as a group to meet the challenge issued by US FIRST for Jr. FIRST LEGO League (non-competitive) or FIRST LEGO League (competitive). In 2018, we will be adding more programs to the L3 Robotics Club.  

  • L3 Robotics Club Jr. (ages 6-10). Registration starts in Sept. for Winter 2018  Read more or register now
    • L3 Robotics Club (ages 10-14; Minimum: 5th grade). 4th graders must be assessed. If your child is interested in joining the team next fall, please have him/her take an L3 Robotics Club Training (in the Winter or Summer). Registration deadline is August 15, 2017. Read moreor register now.   
    • L3 Robotics Club offers more programs all year-round. Our mission is to create a community for children who have an interest or want to explore an interest beyond "just the build."  This fall, we will offer two Next Level Robotics programs.
      • L3 Robotics Club Jr.: Next Level Robotics Teams consisting of 2 to 4 students will be formed to answer the challenge of “what happens with waste?”. The teams have two main objectives: (1) design, build, and program a representation of their research using the LEGO® robotics system (2) Research challenges faced by today’s scientists and create a presentation. No experience required. Kids will apply real-world STEM concepts and learn critical thinking, teamwork and presentation skills. The L3 Academy Robotics Club Jr. is a series of programs geared towards students who want to explore challenging and fun projects beyond "just the build."       • L3 Robotics Club.: Next Level Robotics Teams consisting of 3 to 4 students will be formed to answer the challenge of “how does one learn?”. The teams have two main objectives: (1) design, build, and program a representation of their research using the EV3 robotics system (2) Research challenges faced by today’s scientists and create a presentation.         The L3 Academy Robotics Club is a series of programs geared towards students who want to explore fun, challenging robotics projects and would consider entering competitive robotics competitions.

    Strategy/Critical Thinking

    Chess with Chess Master (K-8)  Register now  

    This fall, we will have an official Chess Master instructing our chess classes. Children starting from Kindergarten all the way to 8th grade are welcome in the class. Student can take the chess program without entering the tournament. Read more.

    Stock Wizards: Financial Education   Register now 

    L3 students will be starting out with $100,000 in virtual cash to make real work financial decisions, while learning financial concepts – from investment portfolio strategies to long-term savings to compound interest. Our stockbrokers will create, manage and analyst an online investment portfolio on a trading platform. Market concepts covered during the program: corporations, stock and ticker symbols, exchange/market, diversification, bonds, risks, stock price, dividends and earnings. Ideally, rising students in grades 4-8 would participate. Limited registration. 

    Brick Academy (LEGO®-based learning)

    Early Simple Machines: Jr. Engineers (Grades PreK-K)  Register now 

    These young engineers will create simple machines – gears, wheels, pulleys and axles – while exploring science and engineering concepts. Using LEGO® Duplo®, our young engineers will build models such as a giant fidget spinner, an old-fashioned clock, a weight scale and more. Science and engineering concepts are introduced during each lesson.

    Early Simple Machines: Gears, Levers & Moving Parts (Grades PreK-K)  Register now 

    Young learners will experiment by creating simple machines – gears, wheels, pulleys and axles – while exploring energy, buoyancy and balance. Using LEGO® Duplo®, our young engineers will build models - such as a seesaw, rolling vehicle, ship, egg beater and much more. Science and engineering concepts are introduced during each lesson. 

    LEGO® Robotics 2.0: Unwired (Grades 1-3)  Register now 

    Our young engineers will build simple bots, program them to move, race or battle as well as make sounds and even react to external stimulus using motors and sensors through icon-based programming. Select builds include a simple Mars Rover, a car, a “leashed” bot and more..

    LEGO® Robotics (Grades 1-4)  Register now 

    Animals & Amazing Movement LEGO® Robotics/Animals and Amazing Mechanisms: Your future engineer can now build a simple machine and program it to move, make sounds and even react to external stimulus using motors, sensors and icon-based programming software. Select builds includes a hungry alligator that chomps away happily; a roaring lion and his pride; and a soccer player with goalie. Class offered in Montclair and Totowa.

    LEGO® Robotics Jr.: KidBots (Grades K-1)  Register now 

    This introductory class will open the door to a whole new world. Children will build simple machines - such as a catapult, a magic wand and a helicopter - using all sorts of gears and simple machines. Some builds will use software to program movement, sensors and reactions. There are different builds between KidBots 1 and KidBots 2. Prerequisite: Children should be able to follow simple pictorial directions with little assistance.

    Advanced LEGO® Robotics (Grades 3-6)  Register now 

    *2nd grade assessment needed to enter class. Obsessed with LEGO® builds? Are the 500+ piece builds taking only an hour? If so, your child is ready for Advanced LEGO Robotics, where he/she will have an opportunity to build more structures with more complex gearing and program it to move, react to movement, etc. Builds include making a pinball machine, X-wing, ATST, bug, etc. 

    Minecraft® Madness  Register now 

    L3 offers a monthly, rotating series of Minecraft courses. Your child can explore historical civilizations, reenact a battle, explore new worlds, go on quests or be challenged to survive.     Coding Academy

    Create your own adventure, interactive story or video game and start learning how to program. Our classes can be taken as a standalone class or as a way to build competency. Each class builds competency within a specific software program. The progression starts with drag and drop icon-based programming to ends with script programming. We have suggested grade levels for each of the programming courses, but if your child(ren) has/have taken courses previously or shows a propensity for this subject matter, please contact us for an assessment and placement.

    Intro to Programming I, II & III (Suggested Grades 3-8)  Register now 

    This class is a prerequisite for Building an App. 2nd grade assessment required to enter class. Intro to Programming I: students begin to learn the framework for creating a program from if/then statements to how to control movement on an X/Y axis to customizing avatars and their environments. A mini game is programmed. Intro to Programming II: Students will take the knowledge and apply it to creating a program from scratch using some additional commands and complex variables. Intro to Programming III is where our young coders will code their own game or interactive story from concept to completion. Programs used will be MIT Scratch, BYOB. This programming track is geared towards script programming in the next series.  Class offered in Montclair & Totowa.

    Python (Level 1) (Grades 6-9)  Register now 

    Explore Python script basics from how to store and manipulate numbers; variables, integrated development environment, loops and how to make decisions with your program. Students will create Magic8Ball and EtchASketch programs. Students with knowledge of MIT Scratch, Alice or BYOB will easily. Python Level 2 and 3 (app building) will follow in Winter and Spring.  

    Science

    ScientistJr. Scientists (PreK-2)  Register now 

    Our young scientists will learn through discussion, creation and hands-on experimentation in areas such as earth science, physics and chemistry. Each Jr. Scientist program has themed topics with learning objectives in each session and parent take-homes describing the activities in each class that empower parents to reinforce/continue with the learning objectives at home. Trial classes are available.  Several themes to choose from:

    Candy Science: Sweet, sticky candy turned into science experiments. Did you ever wonder how much sugar is in candy? What happens when candy is “broken down”? How do you make candy? Candy as a manipulative can be tasty and fun. Wonder if we can make one sing? Hmmmmm.

    Technology, Engineering & Robotics

    Have a curious child? Maybe a budding engineering or a mad scientist? Not sure which class to take? Each week, your child will be given a different activity such as robotics, engineering, science, coding, Minecraft, math, etc.       

    Tinker Lab (Grades 1-3)  Register now 

    Video GameTinker, Thinker, Maker. Our courses are built for kids who like to tinker, design, build and create something as simple as a light-up card to a more complex coding and wiring of a game controller. Our Tinker Lab brings together hands-on maker activities from STEAM projects to programming a simple game controller using Play-doh.

    Robotics & L3 Robotics Club (Grades 1-8) 

    Our young engineers are introduced to the basics of robotics while working with various robots including LEGO® WeDo® to teach basic concepts, computing concepts) and Mindstorms® EV3. Students will create different robotics and program them to complete a challenge. Scroll up to see more information. 

    Math Game L3 Math Academy

    Stanford mathematics professor, Jo Boaler, is a strong advocate for rethinking math education to teach kids to love math, not just get through math. Whether you want your child to move ahead or build a stronger foundation, we are focused on teaching our students to love math and building a better foundation for the future. Class size will vary from 2 to 6 and placement is based on assessments.

    I Love Math (by ability)  Register now 

    Using a combination of the Singapore Math curriculum and supplemental materials (from logic problems to math games), students who show promising math abilities will work in a small group setting to develop their math logic skills. This math program will introduce logic, algebra, geometry and higher math concepts. An assessment is done before placement and registration. There is no charge for the assessment.

    Kangaroo Math Competition Prep  Register now 

    An international mathematical competition that more than 5 million students in more than 40 countries compete in, Kangaroo Math strengthens problem-solving strategies and enhances a child's skills in both science and math. L3 ACademy offers a prep course to get ready for competition. All participans will receive a t-shirt, Kangaroo Math certificate, and a special momento. 

    Pre-algebra/Algebra (by ability)  Register now 

    Using a mix of Singapore Math and logic challenges, young students will be able to move forward in pre-algebra or algebra.  

    Math Homework Helpers  Register now  

    This fall, if your child needs some targeted help with math or assistance with a science project, we are offering homework helpers on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. All our instructors must pass a placement test.
